Cafe Momentum is an amazing organization that helps post-release teenagers learn culinary skills and so much more! We’ve been in existence for four and a half years and this year a new educational component was added. As the Education Coordinator, I am charged with ensuring all interns are enrolled in school or a GED program. Thus, this year, Cafe Momentum’s home school program was developed. The home school program is for those interns who are not enrolled in a brick and mortar school.
The home school program ensures the student interns are in school and attending class. We use an online high school diploma program provided through Retail Pays and Penn Foster and an online GED preparation program, provided through the Dallas Public Library as our classroom curriculum. School hours are: 9:00 am to 12:00 pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Tuesdays are late start and class begins at 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Mondays and Tuesdays, student interns can stay later to work on assignments and to accumulate the required minimum attendance hours.
Our ultimate vision is to provide continuous educational service for our interns in order to ensure their education is not interrupted. Our goal is to help them graduate or successfully, pass GED exams and transition them to college or other post-secondary options.
